3 Steps to Find Your Blogging Niche
Here we’ll list the steps that will help you discover your blogging niche.
Your Interest in this Niche
Your blogging niche is something that you are going to write about for a long time. You definitely can make money blogging from a topic you don’t like.
But, if it’s something that you don’t love, it will be a boring process.
On the other hand, if you love this topic you’ll be more willing to research, learn and write more about it.
Here’s a quick tip to take action now: Write a list with three columns and include:
- 1st list: write down all topics you already know a lot about and you’d love to turn into your favorite activities and hobbies.
- 2nd list: note all these topics you have enough knowledge about and you’re good at them.
- 3rd list: write down topics that you’d like to research and learn more about, but you still haven’t had the chance.
Is this Blogging Niche Popular Enough?
No matter how much you love to write about a specific topic, it won’t be easy to make money if other people aren’t interested in it.
You don’t need to find a niche that is super popular, but you have to confirm that at least some people are searching for this topic online (targeted traffic).
An easy way to start is to research Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest), Quora and Google keyword Planner. Enter terms and keywords relevant to your topic and check if there are enough results:
- Do users ask a lot of questions about this topic?
- Are there other content creators about this niche with many followers?
- Are there posts with many comments, likes or shares?
- Do you see a high monthly volume (above 1k/month) on Google keyword planner?
If the answer to the above questions is yes, then you can probably use many profitable ways to make money blogging about this niche.
Is this Topic Profitable?
To find out if your topic is profitable, you’ll need to do quick research again. If you already know a lot about this niche, write down a list with all products that can help your audience solve their problems.
Then, you can check some popular affiliate programs like Amazon, ShareAsale, Clickbank (for digital products) or JVZoo. Are there enough affiliate products relevant to your niche? Do they convert well?
Also, you can check other content creators (around this topic) and find out how they monetize their blogs & what products they promote to their audience.
Further, check again Google Keyword Planner pay attention to the CPC (Cost per Click) column. If you see a high CPC (more than $2) it means that advertisers pay a lot of money to Google for one click. Thus, this topic is profitable.
Note that the higher the CPC the more money you’ll earn if you monetize your blog through ads.
In contrast, if you see a low CPC (e.g. $0,02) it means that this particular keyword is not profitable. This is probably the best way to validate if your niche is profitable enough.
Another awesome way to make money blogging is to create your own products like online courses or ebooks. After you research if there’s an audience willing to buy something like this, you can create a product that helps your readers accomplish a goal.
About Your Competition
What if you find out that your niche has a lot of tough competition and many established websites about it? Should you enter it or should you write about something else?
Well, competitive niches are popular because there is a lot of money to be made. However, you’ll need to work hard and create better content than your competitors to succeed in competitive niches.
It will also take longer to make money from it, but once you establish your name you can make a lot of money from this topic.
On the other hand, if you decide to enter a niche without competition, you should make sure you can monetize it and get targeted traffic.
Ideally, you want to enter a niche that has high monthly search volumes, high CPC but not a too tough competition!
Firstly, you should understand why it’s important to stick to a specific blogging niche and become an expert in it.
Then, you should try to find a topic you’d like to write about and check to see if there’s already an audience that is looking for your topic online.
Last but not least, don’t forget to check if there are enough opportunities to monetize your blog like affiliate products, services or offers.
