When Life Gives You Lemons – Suck Them Dry to Show How Strong You Are

There are ways in which you can make the lemonade, but many people won’t find it sweet enough. When life gives you lemons, as it probably has this year, do your best to stand your ground. Here’s how.

The Idea of Comparison

How many times have you heard that you should compare to someone who “has it worse”. Personally, while I understand that this serves to show you how grateful you should be, I hate this type of a mood booster. There will always be someone who has it worse than you. It’s a fact. It’s also a fact that there’ll be people who have it way better. Now, if you compare yourself to those “below”, you can easily grow a false sense of pride. You might subconsciously place yourself on top of those who suffer more, and feed your ego in a negative way.

On the other hand, continuous comparison to those who have a better life will pull you into depression. Just take a look at what social media has done to people. Flashy photos of (mostly) fake lives made everyone want to get something that can’t be achieved. Many won’t have a Lambo. Many won’t have a mansion. Many won’t have children. No matter how much they want to. That’s why the idea of comparison takes away the only thing you have – a strong focus on the current moment. It shifts your vision towards the worse (or the best), while you successfully ignore what’s going on in YOUR LIFE, both physically and mentally.

Validating Emotions

If you are ready to change, stop looking at others and turn towards yourself. Validating your emotions is essential for positive survival. I say positive survival, because there can also be a negative one. You can either select to see the positive side, or remain in the negative one. When life gives you lemons, first thing that you must do is validate your emotions. Quote for explanation:

“Self-validation is accepting your own internal experience, your thoughts, and your feelings. Self-validation doesn’t mean that you believe your thoughts or think your feelings are justified. There are many times that you will have thoughts that surprise you or that don’t reflect your values or what you know is true. You will also have feelings that you know aren’t justified. If you fight the thoughts and feelings or judge yourself for having them, then you increase your emotional upset.”

When Life Gives You Lemons, Focus on Yourself

You are the most important person in your life. Whatever you’re going through will eventually pass, and what you must do is focus on the moment. There are many ways to live in the moment:

  • Meditation
  • Spending time with loved ones
  • Enjoying solitude
  • Writing
  • Driving around
  • Listening to music

Life is sometimes hard, but it’s up to you to make it better. The only thing you can control is how you feel in regards to people and events around you. That’s why you should remain strong enough, focus on yourself, and validate your emotions.
